Making flash do more

Memory outfit Corsair has announced the launch of a new dock for flash drives with one touch backup for PCs.

We spoke to product manager Gareth Ogden to find out what the thinking was behind the Voyager Port. "We want to put the idea into people's minds that they can use flash drives in a different way," he said.

Ogden anticipated the obvious question: why would anyone chose this over an external hard drive, which would offer a lot more storage for your money and faster read/write speeds.

"It's not going to beat a portable hard drive on cost per gigabyte, but it's much more portable or durable. An external hard drive will be faster but that shouldn't really matter, especially when doing scheduled backups."

The thinking seems to be that lots of people already have high capacity flash drives and that number will only increase as the price per GB halves roughly every six months. Many users will find they don't use a lot of that capacity so they might welcome the option of one touch backup onto these instead of forking out on an external HDD.

Corsair will also be hoping that this enhanced functionality will encourage consumers to buy more high capacity flash drives, although the Voyager Port will allow any flash drive to run on it.
