Surely not
The Times of India reckons the Indian government is going to unveil a laptop that costs a mere ten dollars tomorrow.
Loads of other news sites have picked up the news but nobody seems to have any spec details. A common assumption is that it will have 2GB memory and will be wireless enabled.
Our first thought on hearing this news was "that's just silly", but maybe it isn't. The $100 laptop project indirectly led to the netbook being developed and look what effect that has had. Having said that it's hard to see how it's possible to make much more than a souped-up calculator for so little money.
The smart money is on the Rs 500 (as it's being referred to, presumably in reference to a price of 500 rupees) only costing so little due to heavy subsidy from the Indian government. It is intended just for the poor and apparently there are elections coming up soon.
To get some idea how plausible this is, or at least how much subsidy the state has to chuck in, we thought we'd tap the collective wisdom of the HEXUS.community and ask what it thinks is the lowest price a functional PC could be made for. Let us know if you think this is possible, or if not how cheap can they get?
