Interesting details
There were some interesting details about the role Intel's low price CPU - Atom - is having financially. Sequentially (quarter-on-quarter), revenue from Atom was up 50 percent to $300 million. This was the reason the average selling price (ASP) of Intel's products was sequentially flat.
Intel also revealed that the drop off in gross margin, from 58.9 to 53.1percent sequentially, "was primarily due to higher factory underutilization charges and higher inventory write-offs." In other words lower demand.
For the year, however, Intel still managed to set new records for microprocessor units, server revenue and mobile microprocessor revenue. It also announced $800 million in cost savings.
Intel's shares were up 4.21 percent to $13.85 in after hours trading.
