Unlucky Irish

As part of its drive to cut $3 billion a year in overheads, Dell is relocating the manufacture of its PCs to be sold in the EMEA region to Poland. As a result, around 1,900 of its manufacturing workforce in Limerick, Ireland, will be made redundant in 2009.

Sean Corkery, VP of EMEA operations at Dell, said: "This is a difficult decision, but the right one for Dell to become even more competitive, and deliver greater value to customers in the region. We will treat affected employees with dignity and respect and offer them every practical support through this extended transition period to minimize the impact on them."

There will still be a thousand or so employees left at Dell's Limerick site, dealing primarily with things like procurement and logistics as well as its "EMEA Command Center". It looks like Dell's Dublin office (pictured below) is unaffected.

Thats another business off to the Eastern block.

Prices will stay the same.
Costs go down for Dell.
Quality goes down for everyone.
This paired with their new deals with cheaper component manafacturers from last year.. HMMMMMM…

I've been a dell man for a long time but these sorts of changes will require some scrutiny before a purchase.
Considering we sell 90% Dell, this could see a move to the other side…

Will this also mean lead times will double coming from Poland and shipping costs go up even more?
