Eternal flame

Over two years after nearly ten million notebooks had to be recalled due to a fire risk from overheating Sony batteries, the problem still hasn't gone away.

The first recall primarily affected Dell notebooks but this time HP seems to be in the spotlight. A bulletin from the US consumer product safety commission (CPSC) has announced that 35,000 notebooks - mainly HP - containing Sony batteries need to be recalled.

According to the bulletin, the recall is limited to notebooks sold between November 2004 and June 2006 so it looks like this is the same batch that was responsible for the original recall rather than a whole new lot.

There are a further 65,000 of these batteries in circulation worldwide but the UK Trading Standards product recall website has yet to make any announcement regarding the UK.

UPDATE - 13:45, 31st October 2008: HP has contacted us to confirm the model numbers that may be affected in the UK. They are: the Dv1000 series, Dv8000 series and Zd8000 series.
