The long-awaited T-Mobile G1 - the first phone to run on the open source Android platform promoted by Google - has arrived in the UK and is being sold exclusively through T-Mobile stores and its website.

The first one was sold when T-Mobile's flagship Oxford Street store opened at 7am. Software programmer Andy Burgess had been queueing since 5am and was the first person to get one. "Being the first person in the UK to own this mobile phone is amazing," gushed Burgess. "I'm going to be popular at work! I've been waiting for this phone for months and I knew I had to be the first to own it."

T-Mobile UK CEO Jim Hyde was equally swept up in the moment: "With the richest web experience ever seen on a mobile and thanks to the Android Market, the unprecedented ability to make your mobile work just the way you want, the T-Mobile G1 is set to revolutionise the way we use our phones," he said.

The T-Mobile G1 is available for free on T-Mobile Combi and Flext price plans from £40 a month, which include "unlimited" web browsing. Among the unique attractions of the G1 is access to the Android Market pool of free additional applications, of which there are already 50.

We would love to hear from any readers who have one or are planning to get one. Please tell us what you think about the Googlephone in the HEXUS.community.

oh dear
That has to be the saddest quote I have ever read.
your both jealous :p
Its a phone for goodness sake. Get over it.
That is quite possibly the ugliest phone that HTC have ever produced. I mean, really…Blue Angel looked better than that and that was about 5-6 years ago. Please tell me the Burgess quote's just something that you made up?
