Earlier today we brought you the news that HP has finally joined the consumer netbook party with its new Mini 1000 series.

At time of writing we only had US pricing and availability, but a quick word with HP has revealed the UK and European details.

The first model to be available will called the Compaq Mini 700, which is expected to arrive here in mid-December and to cost £299. This is the base price for an 8.9 inch Windows XP model.

In January we will see the "fashionista" model, otherwise known as the Vivienne Tam edition, which also uses XP and will come in at £399.

The odd decision is, not only to delay the actual HP Mini 1000 until mid-February, but to restrict it to the MIE Linux OS and charge an extra hundred quid for the privilege.

Yes, the Linux HP Mini 1000 will cost £399. This is especially surprising as in the US the Linux version is actually $20 cheaper than the XP one and costs less in dollars than the UK one does in pounds at $379.
