Recession, what recession?

Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the graphics market research specialist, has revealed that the graphics market appeared unaffected by the global economic crisis in the last quarter.

Over 111 million GPUs were shipped in Q3 '08, compared to 91 million in Q3 '07. That's a 22.5 percent increase.

Furthermore, GPU shipments increased by 18 percent over Q2 '08, which is the largest quarter-to-quarter increase in six years.

The market was, or course, mainly divided among the three big players. Intel has gained a big chunk of market share over past year, mainly at the expense of NVIDIA and VIA. Both Intel and AMD/ATI took market share from NVIDIA in the last quarter.

"The third quarter is seasonally up as OEMs place orders for chips to build inventory for the holiday season. However, this quarter was up more than any other for some time, and in spite of suggestions of a recession that started last Q4," said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of JPR. "Desktops increased seasonally and notebooks enjoyed quite significant gains."
