Preparing for i7

Intel has made the first in what may be a round cuts to the prices of its incumbent desktop range in anticipation of the arrival of Core i7 next month.

Its entry level 45nm quad core CPU - the Q8200 - has seen its price cut by 14 percent from $224 to $193. The Q6600, which was priced at $193, has had a tenner knocked off it to make room.

Here's a table showing these and all the other price reductions, which we published by Intel last Sunday. Note it also includes a new Core 2 Duo CPU - the E7400:

Model Previous price New price Change
Q8200 $224 $193 -14%
Q6600 $193 $183 -5%
E7400 (2.8GHz) - $133
E7300 $133 $113 -15%
E2220 $84 $74 -12%
E2200 $74 $64 -14%
X3220 $198 $188 -5%
X3210 $198 $188 -5%

A new core2duo, when will they stop, nehalem is out next month anf they're still rolling out the c2d's, no high end cuts though I see, does this show us that nehalem isn't as big of a performance boost as it is said to be?

how did u reach that conclusion?

It's sort of illogical, i just though if they arent dropping the high end processors, and price the new ones the same as them, there is no reason to buy the old ones, i dunno, it made sense in my head

People will still buy the old CPUs as upgrades for old platforms, and likely the chipsets & DDR2 for Core 2 will remain cheaper than an X58 & DDR3, therefore the overall platform cost of a Core 2 will be lower even if CPU is the same price as i7 - so there is a reason to buy it over an i7.

Core 2 prices will probably drop on the high end when i7 actually shows up anyway.
can't wait for Core i7 prices to come down as well, hopefully already before xmas.
