BT Business has announced a new partnership with US SaaS outfit salesforce.com to bring Salesforce CRM to its SMB customers.

With this move, BT is sending a clear signal of intent in the direction of the cloud based software delivery model. It refers to "the prohibitive costs and management of installed, on-premise software," in its press release.

As the name of the company implies, salesforce.com software is available directly, so it's not obvious why it needs BT Business to resell it.

Lindsey Armstrong, EMEA president salesforce.com, declared: "Salesforce CRM will help the thousands of BT businesses looking to manage their business using on demand services. The SaaS model means they will not be hindered by infrastructure costs or risks associated with on-premise software. This signals the start of a new era of success for SMEs and the end of software."

The MD of BT Business, Bill Murphy, effused: "With this announcement we are continuing to change the way small and medium-sized businesses can think about and buy their business applications, delivering to them the benefits of services previously available only to larger companies."
