New tools

There were a few announcements coming out of Redmond, Wash. today, concerning the next generation of Microsoft's suite of tools for software developers - Visual Studio 2010 - and the platform - .NET Framework 4.0.

Microsoft is saying that Visual Studio 2010 will offer improvements in three key areas:

  • Rapid application development
  • Effective team collaboration
  • Break through user experiences

There are obviously a lot of specific new things encompassed by these three "pillars", so we suggest you visit the Visual Studio 2010 website to get all the details. There's also some information about .NET Framework 4.0.

"With Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4.0, we are focused on the core pillars of developer experience, support for the latest platforms spanning client, server, services and devices, targeted experiences for specific application types, and core architecture improvements," said S. ‘Soma' Somasegar, senior VP of the Developer division at Microsoft.

Additionally a new website, based around hundreds of short videos, has just gone live to help people get their head around SQL Server 2008, which was launched a month or so ago. We couldn't see any clips when we clicked on it, so maybe there are some teething problems. Have a look yourself and tell us what you think in the HEXUS.community.

have you installed silverlight 2.0 beta?

a popup appeared at my end after clicking the link.. loads of videos to watch..
Installing now. I had 1.0 and if it needs 2.0 you'd think they would make that more obvious…
But the question is, will PLINQ be shipping as a finished product? The interface has already radically changed once!
Hmmm, I could make it work on IE but not Firefox.
Wow, I think I scored house five times over on BS Bingo reading that marketing-speak page.. :surprised:

Still, it might be usable some time in 2011 if past :beta: have been anything to go by.. ;)
