At Oracle's corporate jamboree OpenWorld 2008, the enterprise software giant announced a new collaboration with Intel, in which they will work together on developing the technology and establishing standards for cloud computing.

Cloud computing is effectively the next evolution of the internet in which, as well as information and ecommerce, applications and services will be accessed entirely online. Obviously this will require a whole new order of magnitude of computing capability than we currently have, which is where Intel comes in.

By aligning itself so closely to the future of Cloud computing Intel is hoping to secure its pre-eminence in the data centre market, which will see its continued growth fuelled by the demands of all these web-based services and applications. As yet there's no sign of such collaborations from AMD. Maybe it doesn't think they're necessary.

The precedent for Intel to want to work with the world's biggest enterprise software company comes in the form of businesses already running applications on shared infrastructure using Oracle Grid Computing technologies. Apparently "...enterprises are now looking to create private clouds for their internal applications and to have the ability to extend them to public, multi-tenant clouds with the same level of security, flexibility and efficiency."

Here's Intel CEO Paul Otellini speaking at Oracle OpenWorld 2008, apparently demonstrating how central to the internet Intel is.
