Unified communications hots up

Jabber is an open-source instant messaging technology, which offers a collection of free instant messaging technologies. The company was privately owned until Cisco Systems announced it was buying it for an undisclosed sum today.

Cisco says Jabber's technologies will "enhance the existing presence and messaging functions of Cisco's Collaboration portfolio." In practice this means that Cisco will be able to offer IM as part of its communications offerings.

This move could well be, in part, a response to the growing threat to Cisco from Microsoft's unified communications plans. However, the technology does apparently allow collaboration across systems such as Microsoft Office Communications Server, IBM Sametime, AOL AIM, Google and Yahoo!.
