No big surprise

The UK arms of Sony BMG and O2 have launched what they call “the first operator supported major label mobile music store.” The announcement came just two days after Sony revealed it was buying Bertelsmann out of their co-owned music publishing venture Sony BMG to take sole ownership of it.

The store is called My Play and is available exclusively through O2’s mobile portal: O2 active. It went live yesterday and offers videos, music and ringtones through artist microsites (as illustrated) for £1.50, 99p and £3.50 respectively.

Ged Doherty, chairman of Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK, said: “It’s never been more important to think of ways in which best to bring the artist and consumer closer together. The exciting thing about this service is that its artist micro-sites do exactly that.”

In our story covering the Sony BMG news earlier this week we suggested something like this might be on the cards. It would be surprising if this quite limited move was Sony BMG's only online music initiative now it's wholly owned by Sony.
