The Business Software Alliance (BSA) announced on Monday an out-of-court settlement by security firm e92plus after a BSA investigation found the security company was running unlicensed copies of Microsoft software on many of its PCs and servers.
The offending company has agreed to pay an undisclosed sum in damages and to acquire the appropriate number of licenses. London-based printing specialist DataActive Communications recently reached a similar settlement for infringements of BSA members’ font and software.
“For a company that specialises in offering businesses improved security and promises a professional approach, a failure to adhere to software licensing requirements is disappointing,” said BSA Legal Affairs Director Sarah Coombes.
Perhaps more surprising is that the unlicensed software in question included the scarcely state-of-the-art MS Windows 2000 and MS Windows SQL Server 2000.
BSA members include Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, Siemens and Symantec. The association provides free tools for a ‘health check,’ software auditing and software management, which can be downloaded from the ‘Tools for IT Managers’ page of the BSA website.
