Nice idea, can they follow through?

One of the graphics market’s premier market researchers and commentators – Jon Peddie (pictured) – has spoken to HEXUS.channel to give his initial thoughts on AMD GAME!, which was launched today in the US.

“All in all I’m glad to see them do it,” he said. “AMD and ATI suffer from the underspoken malady, whereas they do some really great things but forget to tell folks about it, and then along comes Intel or Nvidia who do the same thing and suddenly its invented by them and the world does know about it.”

As we concluded at the end of our first report on AMD’s Channel Summit last week, communication remains one of AMD’s biggest challenges and the more good ideas it comes up with the higher priority it needs to be giving to addressing it. But it also has a number of other matters requiring urgent attention right now.

Peddie clearly sympathises with AMD’s plight. “I just don’t know how high up the commitment for this goes,” he said. “I’ve spoken with the management of AMD and they say they are really behind it, but the company has some major problems, is applying max energy to refocus itself and trim some fat and well, there’s only 25 hours in a day.

“You can also expect to see them promote branding guidance and customisable assets for partner ‘GAME!’ marketing activities. This will be a work in progress and a function of how much resource AMD/ATI can apply – it takes a lot of people to do this kind of thing, just as Intel and Nvidia have learned, and both companies can, and probably will, outspend AMD.”

In spite of all that, Peddie concluded on a positive note. “I give them a hopeful, and encouraging thumbs-up,” he said.
