Camcorder for the masses

Pure Digital Technologies, no apparent relation to the digital radio company, only launched its Flip Video camcorder a year ago, but it already has a reported 13 percent of the US camcorder market. This is due in no small part to the fact that you can currently buy the Flip Video for as little as $99.99.

It is now coming to the UK, facilitated by software and gadget distie Gem, which is focusing on the new, improved version called the Flip Video Ultra – launched last September.

According to the press release: “The Flip Ultra is an incredibly simple, pocket-sized digital video camera designed to record up to 60 minutes of video, point and shoot style. With only three simple operation buttons – on/off, record and delete – and a built-in USB connector, the Flip Ultra allows users to quickly shoot and upload their footage to a PC without any software or prior installation needed.”

Darren Houghton, sales director at Gem, said: “Flip has achieved massive sales in the US where it was the best selling camcorder on amazon.com and took a 13% share of the camcorder market creating a new product category of easy to use, take-anywhere camcorders. We are very excited about its potential in the UK and look forward to working with Pure Digital to launch this innovative yet simple product.”

The press release says that the Flip Video is already available to order, but says nothing about pricing or delivery times. It also refers to a UK site for the product, but this appears to still be under construction.

Update 16:30, 7th April: Gem has stated that it expects the products to be available from its website and sales team next week.
