A ton of Atoms?

Following numerous reports that demand for Intel’s new Atom processor is outstripping supply, an Intel spokesperson has given HEXUS.channel a statement on the matter.

“We’re pleased with the demand for the Intel Atom processor, it’s better than anticipated and we’re working closely with our customers to meet their needs,” they said.

“Atom on 45nm is ramping well and our fabs are well prepared but in this case the demand is better than we anticipated. Our 45nm Hi-K metal gate manufacturing process coupled with the very small die size on Atom means we can increase our output on this product quickly and we are working aggressively to meet the additional demand.”

A number of vendors are expected to produce devices based on the low-power Atom processor in the latter half of this year, with sub-notebook products like the Asus EeePC expected to be particularly numerous. Any shortfall in Atom supply could lead to a similar shortfall in quantities of those devices.
