Commenting on today's launch of the government's "Creative Britain" strategy paper, BPI Chief Executive Geoff Taylor said:

"It's great to see the government taking an holistic view of the creative economy and recognising its importance to Britain's future global success.

“Specifically, the prospect of legislation to ensure ISPs deal with illegal filesharing, and the proposals to beef up IP enforcement show that the government fully understands the importance of copyright to creators.

“Equally important are the plans to expand creative apprenticeships and to encourage the development of live music venues, which will help ensure we stay at the forefront of world creativity.

"We look forward to working with central, regional and local government bodies to help realise the ambition of unlocking and developing British musical talent."

On the proposals on internet file-sharing, Geoff Taylor added: "The Strategy Paper gives a welcome reiteration of the government's strong commitment to tackle the problem of illegal file-sharing. The clear timetable of legislation means that it is now or never for ISPs to negotiate effective and viable agreements with us.

“We still believe that co-operating with ISPs to educate their consumers on the impact of copyright infringement and to develop new commercial partnerships is the best way to address the problem."
