They understand drivers you see

Mike Nash, corporate VP for Windows product management, has announced on his blog that Vista service pack 1 will be made available to volume licensing customers, i.e. “technical customers”, by the end of this week.

Apparently this is in response to public demand and, having released it to manufacturing last Friday, Microsoft is keep to keep the ball rolling. It seems that some drivers don’t work (no!) when SP1 is installed and this can be resolved by uninstalling and then reinstalling the drivers. The reason volume licensing customers are getting SP1 early is that they can get their heads around doing this better then the rest of us.

He adds that SP1 will be made available to MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers later this month, but that the rest of us will still have to wait until mid-March as previously announced.

He concludes with this statement: “I want to be super-clear on one point: Windows Vista SP1 is final. It has been fully released to manufacturing and we do not plan to make any changes to the SP1 code prior to public availability. We are confident in the quality of Windows Vista SP1 and know that it will help improve our customers' experiences with Windows Vista.”

Case of opening the gate after it's sneaked out the back anyway?

I can see their concern though - it's vital that they get this right for the majority of users (even if the blame lies with third party driver devs).

BTW I love people who use phrases like “super-clear” ;)
Improve customer use with Vista? Will it install XP then automatically? :D

so why wait until march to give it to us?

Because *some* third party drivers have had *some* problems with it. They're being careful - something to encourage rather than deride.

while (notusingmybrain != FALSE)
{
   If (postcontent.Matches("Vista"))
  {
      post "use xp/vista crap/blah blah"
   }
}

I feel we ought to just automate these things now - I hate to feel people are wasting precious time posting things like that :mrgreen:
