Phenomenal news for AMD

The world’s third biggest PC maker has thrown its weight behind AMD’s new quad-core processor – a much needed step in the right direction for AMD after 2007’s one way traffic in Intel’s direction.

Acer USA now puts AMD processors in all of its consumer desktops, with the Acer Aspire M5100 now sporting a Phenom. Its business desktops and notebooks are still dominated by Intel offerings.

As you might expect with Acer having bought it last year, Gateway has followed suit with the US retail-only models GM5664 and the whole ‘extreme’ FX series, which currently consists of just the FX7020.

There is currently no sign of the Phenom on either Acer or Gateway’s UK sites, but the smart money must be on this being a global move by Acer.
