Et tu Cuomo?

Andrew Cuomo, the New York attorney general, has served Intel with a subpoena for information to help him investigate “potential anticompetitive conduct” on the part of the processor giant. Specifically, he appears to be looking in to AMD’s long-standing claim that Intel has coerced its customers not to buy AMD CPUs.

“Our investigation is focused on determining whether Intel has improperly used monopoly power to exclude competitors or stifle innovation,” said Cuomo. “We will also look at whether Intel abused its power to remove competitive threats or harm competition in violation of New York and federal antitrust laws.”

The action came only days after Intel finally responded formally to anti-competitive charges levelled at it by the European Commission in July last year, which were followed in September by similar charges from the Korean federal trade commission. In 2005 the Japanese fair trade commission also told Intel it was in violation of its competition laws, a judgement that prompted AMD to file its own antitrust lawsuit against Intel in the state of Delaware later that year.
